Reality of “Nafs-i-Ammarah” (Inordinate soul) of Human being

October 22, 2009 By: Mohammad Rafique Etsame Category: To Be a Better Muslim

By Mohammad Rafique Etesame
Allah All-Mighty has made this world a trial base for the mankind.
where they are put to test by various manners. As the Holy Qur’an reveals,” And surely We shall try you with something of fear and hunger, and loss of wealth and lives and crops; but give glad tidings to the steadfast, Who say, when a misfortune striketh them:Lo! We are Allah’s and lo! Unto Him we are returning. Such are they on whom are blessings from their Lord! And mercy. Such are the rightly guided.”(Al-Baqareh: 157)
Allah Almighty has inspired in the conscious of mankind what is right for it and what is wrong for it as the holy Qur’an reveals,”And a soul and Him Who perfected it, And inspired it (with conscience of) what is wrong for it and (what is) right for it”(Ash-Shams:8).
But the “Nafs-i-Ammarah” i.e. inordinate soul and Satan Iblis are always lie in ambush for misleading to human beings and cause them to commit sins. Satan is an external evil power but inordinate soul exists in the human body, and orders him to commit crime and sins.
So Allah Almighty tests the mankind whether he obeys Satan and inordinate soul or The Beneficent?
Here a question arises whether it is possible to have control over the overwhelming wishes of the inordinate soul? So, according to the Islamic teaching, it is quite possible to do so, as mentioned in the Holy Qur’an,” He is successful who growth, And remembereth the name of his Lord, so prayeth. But ye prefer the life of the world. Although the Hereafter is better and more lasting.” (Al, A’ala:17)
It means that if a faithful believer wants to purify him/her from the filthy of sins and furnish with fair qualities like faith and good actions, so it is possble. We find its good examples in the lives of the Holy Prophets (Peace and blessings of Allah be upon them) and the faithful companions of the Holy Prophet (PBUH), and the Martyrs in the way of Allah, pious and piety ones and the faithful witnesses of the Truth.
The question is: what is the reality of ” Nafs-i-Ammarah”? So, it is a specific power created in human being. It comprises over three parts as:-
(1) Eyes, that always want to see beauty and beautiful things.
(2) Tongue, that always wants to lick up tasty foods whether it is lawful or not.
(3) Sexual organ, that always wants to fulfill her lust even by force, be it is lawful or unlawful.
So, as we see that the disturbance, outbreak, wickedness, obscenity, nudity, murder and fraud etc. in all over the world due to obeying its overwhelming desires. The first murder on the earth took place due to fulfilling sexual desire unlawfully.
Human soul has three categories as:-
(1) Nafs-i-Ammarah, (inordinate soul).
(2) Nafs-i-Lawwama, (Accusing Soul) as mentioned in the Holy Qur’an,” Nay, I swear by the Day of Resurrection; Nay, I swear by the accusing soul (that this Scripture is true). Thinketh man that We shall not assemble his bones? Yea, verily. Yea, We are able to restore his very figures”! (Al-Qiyamah :4)
(3) Nafs-i-Mutma-innah, (soul at peace) as the Holy Qur’an reveals,” But ah! Thou soul at peace! Return unto thy Lord, content in His good pleasure ! Enter thou among My bondmen! Enter thou My Garden”! (Al-Fajr:30)
Religious Scholars say that the human soul in its real nature is “Nafs-i-Ammarah”, i.e. it enjoins to the evils. But by the faith and the good actions and by struggling hard to teach it a lesson of pious and piety, it becomes a Nafs-i-lawwamah, Now it feels ashamed and repenting over committing sins. And after it, when it increases in the goodness and seeks the nearness of Allah, then it becomes the righteous and pious soul. Now it hates un- Islamic ideas and bad acts. It is now called Nafs-i-Mutma-innah.
So, it is necessary for a true Muslim that he should have control over his inordinate soul and teach it the lesson of purity and piety, so that it becomes Nafs-i-Mutma-innah rather then Nafs-i-Immarah

Only the Mercy of Allah…..

October 06, 2009 By: Mohammad Rafique Etsame Category: To Be a Better Muslim

M.R.E
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. Almighty Allah Says in the Holy Qur’an,” Say: O my slave who have been prodigal to their own hurt! Despair not of the mercy of Allah, Who forgiveth all sins. Lo! He is the Forgiving, the Merciful.” (Az-Zumar:53)
According to the “Mufass-i-reen” (The commentators) these verses have been revealed as a ‘sovereign’ remedy for a major sinner; that, all of his sins may  be forgiven absolutely at once by Divine Mercy. It means that if a believer has only a few virtues in his ‘Book of deed, and a large number of sins, if he adjures and vows that he will not do so again, then it hopped that Allah Almighty will forgive all his past sins and will award him the shelter of His endless blessings. According to the teachings of Islam, it is also a sin to become hopeless from the Mercy of Allah. Says in the Holy Qur’an,”Go, O my sons, and ascertain concerning Joseph and his brother, and despair not of the Sprit of Allah, Lo! None despaireth of the Sprit of Allah save disbelieving folk.”(Joseph: 87)
A Hadith-i- Qudsi reveals that Allah Has made a promise to the believers that His mercy will be overcome to His anger forever.(AlMishkat). Says in the Holy Qur’an,”And when those who believe in Our revelations come unto thee, say: peace be unto you! Your lord hath prescribed for Himself mercy, that, whoso of you doth evil and repenteth afterward thereof and doeth right, (for him) Lo! Allah is Forgiving Merciful”.( Cattle:54) The Holy Prophet (PBUH) said that Allah had divided His mercy into hundred parts, ninety nine from those put by Him and the one part of it entered into the hearts of all mothers. Due to this one, all the mothers love their children whether they are of mankind or animals. And the remaining parts of the mercy will be used at the Day of Judgment ( as to forgive the believer’s  sins and cause them entered into Paradise). Bokhari, Muslim) Consider that, if all the mothers of the world can love their children, then what is the limit of Divine love to His creation?
Infect, the entire Universe has been taken place and run only by the mercy of Allah. If there had been no mercy of Him, then there would have no hustle and bustle on the earth but devastation and ruin everywhere.
Reason is that, we see that the capital offenses being committed on the earth like oppression, dacoity, murder, adultery, injustices in the courts and taking bribery and interest etc. These huge crime enrage to Allah. The Holy Qur’an reveals,” If Allah were to take mankind to task for their wrong-doing, He would not leave hereon a living creature, but He reprieveth them to an appointed term, and when their term cometh they cannot put (it) off an hour not (yet) advance (it). (An-Nahal: 61)Also Says,” If Allah took mankind to task by that which they deserve, He would not leave a living creature on the surface of the earth; but He reprieveth them unto an appointed term, and when their term cometh-then verily(they will know that) Allah is ever Seer of His slaves” (Fatir:45)
It is said that the mercy of Allah seeks only a common reason to shower like rain. Once, Hazrat Bayazid Bustame was engrossed in meditation. H found himself in front of Rab-e-Zuljalal. God asked-” How are you faring”? Bayazid said,” I am passing my life according to your commandments with special care to avoid ‘shirk’ at all costs. “God- “But you indulged in ‘shirk’ when you disclosed that you developed stomach pain due to sour curd. Was it not caused by me? But I forgave this unpardonable sin for a small virtue. You was busy writing a script when a thirsty fly sat on the pen nib and you didnot move it till the fly flew away.”So, if a believer commits the sins by his nature, he should

suddenly fall into the lap of Divine mercy, same as a kid when he feels some danger, suddenly runs away and hide himself in the lap of his mother. Allah Almighty says in the Holy Qur’an,”Work not confusion in the earth after the fair ordering (thereof), and call on Him in fear and hope. Lo! The mercy of Allah is nigh unto the good.(Al-A’raf:56)
According to the teaching of Islam, a pious man should not see others particularly the sinner as looking him down upon. Because he does not know whether Allah likes him or that sinner? Similarly. A pious man cannot claim that he will, necessarily be entered in Paradise and also a sinner should not see himself entered in hell. Because it is just possible that Allah may cause the sinner entered in Paradise due to his humility, supplication, weeping and imploring over his sins. And on the other hand, He may cause the scornful pious man entered in Hell due to his pride and arrogance over his virtues. The Holy Qur’an reveals,” (O Muhammad!) call upon your Lord humbly and in secret. Lo! He loveth not aggressors.” (Al-A’raf:55) The Holy Prophet (PBUH) said that he hoped that he might be entered in paradise only by the mercy of Allah. He is the Holy Prophet (PBUH) that is the seal of the Prophets (May peace and blessings upon  them)
and about him mentioned in the Holy Qur’an,” We sent thee not (O Muhammad) save as a mercy for the people.”(The Prophet: 107)
Consider, when  the seal of the prophets (A.S)and the best of the creation will be entered in Paradise by the mercy of Allah, then the common Muslims like us who are” drowning in the river of sins” are most deserving for it.

The Court of Conscience

M.R.E
Almighty Allah Says in the Holy Qur’an,”And a soul and Him Who perfected it. And inspired it (with conscience of) what is wrong for it and (what is) right for it. He is indeed successful who causeth it to grow, and he is indeed a failure who stunteth it.” (As-Shams: 10) According to the “Mufessireen” (The commentators), these verses reveal the two ways of life for the man i.e. The evil and The good inspired by Allah Almighty into his consciene. Now, he knows the best about these in the light of the inspirations. For example, if someone asked about hypocrisy, theft, injustice, murder or adultery etc, and he has no concern to any religion or religious dogmas at all, he will suddenly reply without any hesitation that all these actions were bad. Similarly, if he asked about worship, help the poor, to serve the patents and to participate in others pain and trouble, then he will reply in the same way that all these are very good actions and should be act upon them. This Divine inspiration consists of four parts as:-
(1)What is ‘Haqq’ (The Truth?)
(2) What is “Batil” (The Evil?)
(3) A “Touchstone” to test both of them.(whether they are really ‘Haqq or Batil)?
(4)A power or “Taufeeq” to act upon one of these.
This Devine inspiration called “heart” in the light of Shariah and usually known as “conscience”. The Prophet (PBUH) said when a Muslim committed a crime; it gave a black mark on his heart, if he stopped himself to go on that way, and appealed to God for forgiveness, then the mark removed. And if he did not do so, then the mark increased till it covered the full heart, and that was the rust of the hearts.(Bokhare,Muslim).He (PBUH) asked about the sign of an evil? The Holy Prophet (PBUH) replied that it was the sin; that continuously irritated in his heart and he feared that the people should not become aware over it. (Al-Mishkwat)
This pricking in the heart is due to his living conscience. It teaches him to discriminate between evil and good. When he commits a crime it becomes angry and strikes him, and if he does good, then it becomes satisfy and pleasant. As it is a “court” working in his body. This court has a powerful system of investigation, check and balance and also has an ‘authority’ to enforce its judgments over the man. For example, if he is a criminal of law, then it makes him so much disturb that he handover himself before the law at last.
It is surprising that at the Day of Judgment, the decisions will be taken according to the settlement of this court. When the Book will be given to a sinful man, then Allah Almighty will Ordain to him,”  And every man’s augury have We fastened to his own neck, and We shell bring forth for him on the Day of resurrection a book he will find wide open. (And it will be said unto him) Read the book. Thy soul sufficeth as recker against thee this day.
Whosoever goeth right, it is only for (the good of) his own soul that he goeth right, and whosoever erreth only to its hurt. No laden soul can bear another’s load. We never punish until We have sent a messenger.” (Al-Isra:15). It means that he had been given a light of righteousness in this world. Recognition of the evil and the good inspired in his conscience, but he ignored it. Now it was the Day of Reward .So, the man should decide about himself that what should be the reward for him, Paradise or Hell?
Unfortunately, sometime this court stops to working. It means that the conscience of a man has been died. Now there will be no light and no pricking in his heart at all. The question is: what is the sign of a dying conscience? So, the following hadith reveals about it.
The Holy Prophet (PBUH) said that there were three categories of the Faith. First of these is; when a Muslim saw an evil being done, he should stop it by his hand, (it was the first category of the faith), and if he could not do so, then he should stop it by his tongue i.e. by preaching, (it was the second category). And if he could not, so he should see it as an evil in his heart. And that was the third and weakest category of the faith.(Al-Mishkat-ul-Masbeeh)
It means that if a man does not see an evil as unlawful, then his conscience will be dying.
So, it is the need of time to follow the directions of his “inner court”, so that a man may be got a notable reward at the Day of Resurrection

The Multicolor Pictures

M.R.E
Allah Almighty Says in the Holy Qur’an,” He it is who fashioneth you in the wombs as pleaseth Him. There is no God save Him, the Almighty, the Wise.(The Family of Imran:6) Also Says,” He created the heavens and the earth with truth, and He shaped you and made good your shapes, and unto him is the journeying. (AT-Taghabun:3)
These verses reveal that the real former of the “human picture” is Allah, Who shapes the living pictures with body and soul. “Al Musawwer” is His praise and manner. He is not like the painters of this world who draws the pictures on the papers. He infect, participates and confronts to Allah’s manner. So, Allah will Ordain him at the Day of Resurrection that he should bring life in his pictures. But that was not in his power. So he will be punished.
In this article, the man has been assimilated to a “picture” because he is a real picture formed by Allah, Almighty, and also when he passes away, he lefts behind him only his picture set in a frame as his memorial.
Human face shows many “pictures”. For example, sometimes he is a king having great dignity and rank, pomp and show, and sometimes he is a  beggar, having a poor, miserable and unfortunate complexion, sometimes he is a dacoit, gives a flash of terrible face, heavy moustaches and bloody eyes. And sometimes, he gives a color of very liberal and bountiful man as he is a “Shah Baba”, and sometimes he is a merciless and cruel person, when sometimes he gives a color of a kind and noble person etc.
Usually, it is noted that the “picture” of a pious man is bright and beautiful, and also a sign of prostration seen on his forehead. Almighty Allah Says in the Holy Qur’an,” Muhammad is the messenger of Allalh. And those with him are hard against the disbelievers and merciful among themselves. Thou (O Muhammad) seest them bowing and falling prostrate (in worship), seeking bounty from Allah and (His) acceptance. The mark of them is on their foreheads from the traces of prostration. Such is their likeness in the Torah and their likeness in the Gospel” (Al-Fatah: 29).
The Holy Prophet (PBUH) asked about the recognition of the people of his Ummah at the Day of Judgment? He replied that he would recognize them by their bright faces, hands and feet, that had been washed in the ablution. (Al-Mishkat) It means that they who offer prayers for five times daily, their faces will be bright.
On the other hand, they who have not faith in Allah and His messenger, their faces will be black on that Day as the Holy Qur’an reveals,” On the day when (some) faces will be whitened and (some) faces will be blackened; and as for those whose faces have been blackened, it will be said unto them, Disbelieved ye after your (profession of) belief? Then taste the punishment for that ye disbelieved. As for those whose faces have been whitened, lo! In the mercy of Allah they dwell forever. (The Family of Imran: 107)
So, to make his “picture” bright and beautiful, the man should act upon the teachings of Islam so that he may be pleasant and successful at the Day of Resurrection. Because, “Oyou the honorable “painter”, perhaps your “picture” is uncompleted yet.
